A Surprising Argument for Puppy Mills
Puppy mills are being shut down all across the United States because of the many increases in state regulations. But because the demand for pets continues to be high, the number of illegally imported dogs is at an all-time high.
While illegal pet imports have always been a problem, the percentage of dogs illegally imported was never a large problem until now.
Because of these bans on puppy mills many breeders are getting around these increasing regulations by illegally importing dogs and puppies raised in foreign countries.
The major problem with this rise in illegal dog imports is that we have very little say in how these dogs are raised. Also many of these dogs come in unvaccinated and can be carrying zoonotic diseases like rabies.
But the American public has a large appetite for pets, and most people who want one usually don’t care whether it comes from a foreign country or from the United States.
Because of this many people argue that instead of just shutting down all the puppy mills, we should try and to a better job of regulating them.
Unless laws are passed which specifically limits the number of pets a person can own, people will continue to get their pets when they need them, either legally or illegally.
It is always a popular thing for elected officials to shut down puppy mills, but none of them would dare try to pass regulation limiting families to owing just one dog.
If you are concerned about the large increase in illegal dog imports, and then please contact your elected officials today. Inform them of the problem and ask what they are doing to solve the problem.
It is only by going through a long and thought out process can the American pet supply be both healthy and legal.
