Dog Bark: What Is Your Dog Saying?
Barking is your dog’s natural language, and trying to eliminate it is akin to trying to stop you from speaking. Sometimes though, your dog will not stop barking, no matter how many times you order it to, and in addition to being an annoying situation, your favorite friend might be getting you into trouble. Your neighbors will start complaining to you, specially if the barking takes place at night and it deprives them of their sleep. Some people go and buy an anti bark collar for their dogs, or send them to a dog school, but these should never be your first options. Since your dog can’t speak, it uses barking to try to communicate with you that there is something going on that’s making him feel bad and desperately wants you to do something to make it go away. When does your dog bark? If the dog feels you have forgotten its lunch, barking is the only way to let you know you forgot about it.
Dogs who haven’t eaten will only bark louder because that’s the way you have accustomed them to get their food. Another thing to consider is if the dog’s favorite toy is available to the animal. Interestingly enough, dogs know that they can’t reach a toy on the top of a shelf, but they know that you can and will bark at you until you give it to them.
Dogs have emotional needs as well, so if the dog is not sick, not hungry, not thirsty, and its toys are around, it might be that it’s stressed or just bored. If you’re out all day long and your dog is left alone at home for hours, then barking becomes the only escape for its stress or boredom.
The longer the time is that a dog is left alone, the longer it will bark, and this can take hours. If the barking takes place when you’re working or at school, an anti bark collar will only add extra anxiety to your dog. If you can’t spend more time with your dog, then take it for a walk in an open space as soon as you get home. The objective is stop the “locked” feeling of the dog, while making it feel you’re there for it. Moreover, you get to spend time with your dog, and do a bit of exercise, which is always better than sitting to watch TV.
A dog’s barking can also be triggered by a specific circumstance. If after making sure your dog is healthy and comfortable, you can’t find an answer to “why does my dog bark?” then try to see if there’s something that triggers the barking, like the sound of your telephone. If you find out exactly what excites your dog, you can take action, for example, setting your phone to silence or changing the ring to something more pleasant. In this way, you take away the reason why your dog barks.
