Choices In Styles Of Rabbit Cages

Rabbits are clean animals and they enjoy being litter-trained; therefore, they are quite happy to live in rabbit cages which keep them safe and comfortable. There are many styles of prefabricated or do-it-yourself cages to choose from according to your preferences and needs. Well made, indoor and large outdoor cages or pens will help your pet live a happy, healthy life.

The first and most important factor to consider with any type of cage is, however, that the size ought to correspond proportionally to the size of the bunny. It is recommended that the cage be at least four times as big as your rabbit. A 36″ x 36″ cage, with a height of 24″ to 36″, ought to be sufficient to accommodate a single rabbit weighing over 8 pounds.

Ensuring that height of any cage is at least 24″, it would be fun for your rabbit to have a ramp inside the cage to access a second story loft perhaps. In another style of cage, or in that same cage with a loft, a ramp could lead from the entrance or doorway so your pet can enter and exit their little haven at their own will. This is one of the reasons it is recommended that a cage with a side door is preferable over a top-loader.

Your cage should have a secure locking device to ensure that it remains tightly closed, especially in the case of side doors. Otherwise, it would be unfortunate if the little furry guy or gal squeezed through, burrowed out, or got stuck in the doorway when no one was around to catch it or help it out of its dilemma!

It is preferable to have a cage designed with a large side door as opposed to a smaller one to make it easier to remove a litter-pan. It would be easier, as well, for the rabbit to get in and out on its own, as mentioned previously. In any style cage, door frames ought to be well-covered to ensure safety against injury and chewing since most cages are made of wire.

Similarly, it would be quite uncomfortable for little bunny to have its paws on a wire floor all the time, so a cage with a wood floor as opposed to a wire one would make for a cozier environment. If the floor were treated with a non-toxic substance and fitted snugly to the sides of the cage, it would not be chewable and would also be easy to remove for cleaning. Bunnies love to nestle into hay, so a nice soft floor covering like that would be easy to clean.

Since bunnies can be litter-box trained, a nice soft hay floor-covering is easy to keep fresh and clean when changed at least on a weekly basis. It can be brushed off the wood floor and once the wood floor has been wiped down well, before you know it, the cage is clean! It’s almost as if it’s a style that cleans itself!

Outdoor types of cages can be constructed or prefabricated just as easily as indoor ones. A well-covered, secure, outdoor playpen area would be appreciated by your pet, but don’t forget to be sure that you have laid down an indestructible floor underneath it – as rabbits love to burrow and chew.

It is reassuring to know your pet will be kept safe from bad weather and predators such as hawks, dogs, cats, etc. In addition to the indoor styles mentioned earlier, a more sophisticated outdoor cage would have a top covered with a water-proof shield. If the top cover were to also let in light, your bunny may well enjoy being outside when you are at work as long as it is not be sweltering in the sun all day. It might also like sleeping under the stars all night in its well-protected environment.

The range of styles of rabbit cages is much larger than one would think. Given that wide selection, however, just a as with humans, the cleaner and safer rabbit cages are, the happier the rabbit.
