Providing The Right Kennel For Your Pet Dog

There are some costs you meet when you are a dog owner- like dog food and vet appointments. The other cost that is not highlighted very often is the cost of providing shelter for the dog. Assuming that yours is a large dog, that dog bed near the fireplace will only be a temporary solution to his housing needs. Since you can’t provide this inside the house, you need to get a dedicated one outside. A kennel provides all the space the dog will ever need to call his own and a play area when he wants to burn some energy. And after sunset, its the place he will crawl into for his sleep.

A dog does not come with a manual so you have to figure out the caring part yourself. But it’s been done over the years and there are a few things you can pick up from them. First is the feeding routine. Unlike adult humans, adult dogs don’t need to feed so often. Once or twice a day is enough. During their growing months though, they need to feed more often. The kind of dog food you get also matters. It should be balanced enough to provide every nutritional requirement a dog might have. You are allowed to share a snack with them from time to time, but this should not replace dog food entirely.

The size of the kennel however, depends on just how big your dog is. A small terrier would hardly need a lot of room to play or just run around. But a bigger dog, like a Dalmatian or a Shepherd would need much more room. When building the kennel, it is good to consider the possibility of future expansion.

A kennel is more than a simple enclosure. It is basically a home for your pet dog, and probably where he will spend most of his time. It needs to feel comfortable and homely. Most important feature of all is that of offering protection from the elements. A roof will protect it from the rain and snow, but not from the cold winter nights. If getting a heater for the kennel is impractical, build a doghouse in one corner instead. It will provide the needed insulation, and eliminate the need to put a roof over the kennel in the first place.

Playing with your dog is really important when you want them to grow up healthy. They need to fill the thrill of a chase, and that’s what Frisbees and sticks are for. Dog training helps your dog develop some manners, so try it whenever you are out in the park together. Sometimes you can simply walk the dog and that will help him expend any locked up energy he has.

Dedicate enough time to building a kennel, and your dog will grow to love it. When it provides good living conditions, you will be comfortable letting your dog stay there even when youre away.
