Baby Ferrets – Procedures To Keep Baby Ferrets Healthy

Baby ferrets, also known as kits, need more attention and care than full-grown ferrets. By making the right moves early in their lives, you may lengthen their lifespans significantly. Some procedures, specifically, can make the difference between them dying in their first year or if they live full, happy lives.

The first, and arguably the most important item on the list, is their vaccinations. They need a series of distemper shots, as this virus, if contracted, is fatal in almost 100% of cases. Most baby ferrets will have already had one distemper shot by the time they’re in your hands. Three more shots will usually follow, given a few weeks apart. Rabies is another big threat, usually given around their third distemper shot.

If you aren’t going to breed your ferrets, you’d be better off getting them neutered or spayed early on. The idea may seem cruel, but if you know anything about ferret physiology, you’ll find it’s far more cruel and dangerous not to (at least in the case of females). Unless your female ferret has regular sexual contact or is spayed, it may be in heat for months at a time. This releases gobs of estrogen into the system which may become toxic in time. Neutering won’t save a male ferret’s life, but it will reduce aggression. For both genders, the procedure may soften their coat and let them smell better due to a change of oil production.

Descenting may be a factor in the minds of some kit owners. Ferrets have a defensive mechanism much like a skunk’s spray when they feel threatened. Post-operation they may no longer do this. There is a small window at a young age where this can be done without too much trouble, but becomes traumatic should it be tried later. Many ferret owners never have it done to their ferrets and have no complaints though.

In summation, the critical ones for baby ferrets are distemper and rabies vaccinations and getting females spayed. Any others are optional and based on your preferences. Pet stores often sell their baby ferrets already altered and descented, so ask before you buy.
